2-stroke or 4-stroke? It's the eternal question in motocross and enduro. Here are the real differences, without the clichés.

01The 2-stroke: light, sharp, simple

Pros

  • Weight: around 10 kg less than a 4-stroke of the same displacement. On a 250, that's massive.
  • Sharpness: instant response, with the useful power band high in the revs.
  • Simple engine maintenance: no valves to shim, top end easy to redo.
  • Lower purchase price: roughly 20-30% less than an equivalent new 4-stroke.
  • Home-repairable: an amateur mechanic does a top end in 2 hours.

Cons

  • Frequent top ends: every 25-50 hours depending on displacement. That's expensive and time-consuming.
  • Oil consumption: you either premix the fuel or maintain a TPI pump.
  • Noise: characteristic 2-stroke bark, sometimes poorly tolerated at dB-limited tracks.
  • Emissions: more polluting (though fewer parts to manufacture makes the overall footprint debatable).
  • Availability in competition: the MX1/MX2 world championships have moved to 4-stroke.

02The 4-stroke: torque, smoothness, longevity

Pros

  • Massive low-end torque: easy to ride, accessible to beginners.
  • Engine longevity: top end every 60-100 hours, valves at 100+ hours.
  • Versatility: from relaxed riding sessions to motocross competition, it copes.
  • Modern standard: most competition classes are 4-stroke.
  • Predictable consumption: no premix, no oil to measure out.

Cons

  • Weight: heavier, especially the 450s.
  • Complex maintenance: valves to shim, clearances to measure (unless you learn, or pay someone).
  • Engine failure can get very expensive: €2,000-3,500 if the engine lets go.
  • Higher purchase price: roughly 20-30% above an equivalent 2-stroke.
  • Less linear response: it pushes rather than pulls (a different sensation).

03Which displacement for whom?

Beginner

  • 2-stroke 125: light, forgiving, not too powerful.
  • 4-stroke 250: linear torque, easy to manage, racks up your hours without stress.

Intermediate

  • 2-stroke 250/300: sharp, fun, demands a certain skill level.
  • 4-stroke 350: the perfect weight/torque compromise, the weapon of a well-prepared rider.

Experienced / committed

  • 4-stroke 450: the benchmark machine in MX1 motocross. Physically demanding.
  • 2-stroke 250: back with a vengeance over the last 5 years, for its weight and simplicity.

Enduro

  • 2-stroke 250/300 TPI: the world enduro benchmark (KTM, Husqvarna, GASGAS).
  • 4-stroke 350-450 EXC: if you do a lot of rally-raid style riding.

04Running costs over 100 hours

An approximation for a motocross bike ridden regularly:

Item 2-stroke 250 4-stroke 450
Oil change + filter (every 15 h) 7 × €15 = €105 7 × €35 = €245
Top end 1 × €350 0 (at the 100 h limit)
Valves 0 1 × €80 check
Pads, chain, filters ~€300 ~€300
Tyres ~€250 ~€250
Approximate total ~€1,005 ~€875

The 4-stroke costs slightly less in routine maintenance — but the risk of engine failure can flip the whole calculation.

05Honest verdict

  • If you love DIY spannering and want a lively bike: 2-stroke.
  • If you want to ride without overthinking it: 4-stroke.
  • If you're after pure competition effectiveness: 4-stroke 450 or 2-stroke 250 depending on the discipline.

06Track your hours, whichever you choose

Whether you go 2-stroke or 4-stroke, the hour meter is your friend. Without one, you'll never know when to do your top end (2-stroke) or check your valves (4-stroke). With one, no more stress, no more guesswork.
