An AirTag costs about thirty pounds, runs a year on a coin cell and hides anywhere. The question comes up constantly on motorcycle forums: is it enough to get a stolen bike back? The honest answer comes in two parts, because an AirTag does one thing very well and another thing not at all.
01What an AirTag actually does
An AirTag has neither a GPS chip nor a SIM card. It does not know where it is. It broadcasts an encrypted identifier over Bluetooth, and it is the iPhones passing nearby that anonymously report the position back to Apple. The Find My network counts over a billion devices, which makes it the largest of its kind in the world.
In a dense area, this works remarkably well. A bike parked on a busy street, in a city centre, at a station car park: there are iPhones around constantly, and the position refreshes often. For thirty pounds, that is hard to beat.
02The three limits that matter in a theft
With no iPhone nearby, there is no position. This is the structural limit. An isolated barn, a locked underground garage, a van driving through the night, an industrial estate unit: these are exactly where stolen bikes end up, and exactly where the network is thinnest. The device has not failed, it simply has nobody to talk to.
An AirTag warns the thief. This is the point most often missed. Apple built in anti-stalking protection, precisely to stop people being followed without knowing: an AirTag travelling with someone who is not its owner triggers a notification on their iPhone, and eventually plays a sound. Android has an equivalent mechanism. What protects the public here works against you, because the thief is told there is a tracker in what they have just taken.
There is no movement alert and no history. An AirTag does not wake you when the bike moves. You discover the theft by walking to the garage, then you open the app. The first hours, the ones that count, have already gone.
03What a tracker with its own connection changes
A motorcycle GPS tracker carries a GPS chip and a cellular modem. It works out its own position and sends it over 4G, without depending on a stranger's phone. Three practical differences follow.
- It reports from anywhere with mobile coverage, including the far side of the country.
- It alerts on movement. The notification goes out at the first suspicious movement, not when you notice the empty space.
- It keeps a history, which produces a timestamped report the police and your insurer can actually use.
In return, a tracker costs more than an AirTag and needs a more serious power source. Most models on the market add a monthly subscription for the SIM, though not all: the 4G SIM in HOROTAG GPS is included for ten years in the purchase price.
04So, AirTag or GPS tracker?
They do not play the same role, and setting them against each other only half makes sense.
An AirTag is an excellent object for finding what you have mislaid: a helmet left behind, a bag in a paddock, a bike parked in a multi-storey when you cannot remember which floor. It is a memory aid in a busy environment.
A GPS tracker answers a different problem: knowing immediately that something is moving, and following it where nobody goes. It is a tool for theft, not for forgetfulness.
