The ULTIMATE GPS “up to 8 years” is the weekend-leisure profile, the median French one: 8.1 years, rounded down. The range is not a battery-life ranking.
On the three profiles that ride the most — adventure touring, high-mileage, daily city use — it is the HOROTAG GPS that lasts longest, not the ULTIMATE GPS. That is normal and deliberate: the ULTIMATE takes thirty times more fixes, and that is paid for in battery. The ULTIMATE buys resolution with battery; the GPS buys duration with less resolution. The right device depends on how you ride, not on its rank in the range.
Figures calculated with the official Digital Matter calculators and our real settings (both devices report every 8 h at rest; while riding, 30 min and a fix every 15 min on the GPS, 10 min and a fix every 30 s on the ULTIMATE GPS). The first number is the nominal case, the one in brackets the worst case. Batteries are replaceable and the app shows the remaining level as a percentage.

The difference between a tracker that tells you where your bike is and one that redraws your ride comes down to a single thing: how often it takes a fix. HOROTAG ULTIMATE GPS takes a GPS fix every 30 seconds while riding and reports a position every 10 minutes — 120 fixes an hour against 4 on the HOROTAG GPS. On a mountain road, that produces a track that follows the hairpins instead of cutting across the valley.

Every ride becomes a dated trip in the app: distance, duration, full route, replayable. Rides stack up in a history that belongs to the bike, not to some third-party cloud account, and that follows the bike at resale along with the sealed service log.

At rest, both trackers wake every 8 hours: the difference is not played out standing still. It is played out the moment the bike moves. On unexpected movement, the alert fires in 5 minutes on average against 15 on the HOROTAG GPS, and tracking switches to a tighter cadence: it is the same anti-theft engine, with a tracking resolution thirty times finer during the chase.

Which bikes it makes most sense on
On a sportbike, a café racer or a roadster, the value is as much in the track as in the anti-theft: you come back from a ride and watch the whole thing again. The rate, and the gap is far wider than it sounds. HOROTAG GPS takes a fix every 15 minutes while riding and reports every 30 minutes — 4 fixes an hour: perfect for knowing where a bike has gone, and that frugality is what makes it last. HOROTAG ULTIMATE GPS takes a fix every 30 seconds and reports every 10 minutes — 120 an hour, thirty times more. In practice, at 50 km/h, two consecutive positions are 417 m apart on the ULTIMATE GPS against 12.5 km on the GPS: the track is fine enough to replay a ride corner by corner. Does it count hours AND mileage on its own?
Yes, though not the way the RUUVI does: it is an automatic hour and mileage counter (estimated). The app derives your hours from the duration of your trips, and your mileage with them, then lets you adjust both. It does not seal them. The HOROTAG GPS also estimates its hours, from the length of your rides, but it gives no mileage at all: its reporting rate cannot measure it honestly. Does the detailed track drain the battery faster?
Yes, by design: that is the price of resolution. And it goes further than a simple drop — on the profiles that ride the most, the ULTIMATE GPS lasts LESS long than the HOROTAG GPS. A high-mileage rider: 3.7 years against 4.5. Daily city use: 2.5 years against 3.3. An adventure bike on long trips: 4.3 years against 4.8. The order reverses on quieter profiles: 8.1 years against 5.3 for weekend-leisure use, 9.1 against 5.5 for a sportbike ridden through the warm season. So the range is not a battery-life ranking: the ULTIMATE buys resolution with battery, the GPS buys duration with less resolution. The battery is replaceable and the app shows the remaining level as a percentage.
Is a subscription needed for tighter tracking?
No. The €399 includes the device, the app and the 4G IoT SIM for ten years. Tighter tracking, trip history and alerts are in the price, with no paid options.
Does it work abroad?
Yes, the IoT SIM is multi-operator and roams across Europe. Tracking continues through a trip or a cross-border ride with nothing to change.
How is it fitted?
