The range is not a battery-life ranking.
On the three profiles that ride the most — adventure touring, high-mileage, daily city use — it is the HOROTAG GPS that lasts longest, not the ULTIMATE GPS. That is normal and deliberate: the ULTIMATE takes thirty times more fixes, and that is paid for in battery. The ULTIMATE buys resolution with battery; the GPS buys duration with less resolution. The right device depends on how you ride, not on its rank in the range.
Figures calculated with the official Digital Matter calculators and our real settings (both devices report every 8 h at rest; while riding, 30 min and a fix every 15 min on the GPS, 10 min and a fix every 30 s on the ULTIMATE GPS). The first number is the nominal case, the one in brackets the worst case. Batteries are replaceable and the app shows the remaining level as a percentage.

Hours climb from your rides.
HOROTAG GPS has no vibration sensor: it does not measure the engine. What it does know is when your bike sets off and when it stops. The app derives the length of each ride from that and grows your hour meter on its own — all you do is adjust it if the estimate has drifted. There is no mileage, though: at 4 GPS fixes an hour, two consecutive positions are 12.5 km apart at 50 km/h, and adding up those jumps would measure nothing honest. Nor is it a sealed count: sealing is the RUUVI's job, and it can live on the same bike. The full service log is included — reminders, history, resale certificate — identical to the other two models, server-signed, tamper-proof.

How a motorcycle GPS tracker with no subscription works

HOROTAG GPS carries a GPS chip and a low-power 4G modem. The device takes its position, sends it over the cellular network, and your bike shows up on the map in the app, without going through your phone, without Bluetooth, without being in range. That is the fundamental difference with a plain Bluetooth tag: the tracker talks to the network on its own, even from the other end of the country.

The 4G IoT SIM card is included for ten years in the €299. That is what makes a subscription unnecessary: the cost of the data is paid once, up front, instead of every month. Over ten years, a tracker at €5 a month costs €600 in subscriptions on top of its purchase price.

With the bike parked, the device wakes up every 8 hours to report where it is. As soon as it detects movement, it switches to a position every 30 minutes, with a GPS fix every 15 minutes: enough to piece together where a bike loaded into a van has gone, not enough to replay a corner. That choice — knowing where it went rather than drawing every curve — is what gives it up to 5 years of battery life for weekend-leisure use, where a permanently wired tracker drains a motorcycle battery in a few days of parking.

The unit is IP68 waterproof and fits with no wiring, under the seat, under the fairing or in the tail unit. Nothing to route, nothing to splice into the loom: a thief who cuts the battery does not cut the tracker.
Where to fit it on the bike
The best spot is the one a thief will not think of and that lets the signal through: under the seat, in the storage tray, under the tail cover, behind a side panel. Motorcycle GPS tracker: frequently asked questions
A motorcycle GPS tracker with no subscription: really no fees?
Yes. The €299 covers the device, the app and the 4G SIM for ten years. No monthly charge, no paid option to unlock alerts or history. After ten years, only the SIM needs renewing.
Does it work on a motocross bike with no battery connected?
Yes, and it is a common use. The device has its own lithium battery and depends on no circuit of the bike. On a motocross bike it mainly protects during the moments most exposed to theft: the van, the garage and the paddock.
How accurate is the position?
A few metres in the open, like any GPS. Under a metal shed or in an underground car park, a fix can be missed: the device then reports the last known point with its timestamp, which is enough to know which way the bike went.
Can a thief detect or jam it?
The device transmits nothing continuously and does not announce itself. A GSM jammer can block reporting while it is running, but the tracker keeps recording and sends everything as soon as it finds network again. That is why it is fitted hidden, with no visible cable.
Does it count engine hours?
Yes, but not the way the RUUVI does. The GPS has no vibration sensor: it does not know whether the engine is running. It does know when the bike sets off and when it stops, and the app derives the length of the ride from that: your hours climb on their own, and you adjust them in a few taps if the estimate has drifted. It is an estimate, not a sealed meter, and there is no mileage at all — the device's reporting rate cannot measure it honestly. Where should you hide a GPS tracker on a motorcycle?
Under the seat, inside the fairing, under the rear mudguard or in the false floor of a top box: anywhere it cannot be seen without removing something. Because the device is self-contained it does not need to sit near the battery, which leaves the hiding place up to you. Avoid direct contact with a large metal mass, which degrades reception.
My bike has been stolen, what do I actually do?
Open the app to see the last known position, and file a police report rather than going there yourself. The app produces a timestamped PDF report with the position history, for the police and your insurer. Recovering a stolen bike yourself is dangerous and it is not your job.
Is it legal to track your own motorcycle?
Yes. Tracking a vehicle you own is entirely legal. What is not legal is tracking someone else's vehicle without their knowledge. If the bike is ridden by another person, a relative or an employee, that person must be informed.
GPS beacon, GPS tracker, GPS immobiliser: what is the difference?
None, fundamentally. They are three names for the same object: a device that reads its position and sends it. The real difference between models on the market is elsewhere: how the device communicates, over a cellular network or only Bluetooth, and whether it needs a subscription.
Is an AirTag enough to protect a motorcycle?
An AirTag has neither GPS nor a SIM card. It broadcasts over Bluetooth and is only located when an iPhone passes nearby, which works on a busy street and far less in a closed garage or a van on the motorway. A GPS tracker carries its own GPS chip and 4G modem: it reports its position itself, without depending on someone else's phone.
Does it work on a scooter, a quad or an electric motorcycle?
Yes. The device is self-contained, wired to nothing and dependent on no circuit of the vehicle. Scooter, quad, side-by-side, electric motorcycle, trailer: anything that can be stolen and has room to hide a device the size of a deck of cards.
