USER GUIDE

From the boxto your first session.

Fifteen minutes to mount the device, pair it, calibrate it. Five minutes after every major service. The rest of the time, you ride. This guide covers all three HOROTAG models (RUUVI, GPS, ULTIMATE GPS) — every step notes when it's different.
STEP 01

Creating your account & downloading the app.

  1. Download the HOROTAG app from the App Store or Google Play (see App page).
  2. Open the app, choose "Create my account". Email + password + username.
  3. Confirm your email via the link you receive (check your spam folder, it sometimes takes 1-2 min).
  4. Enable 2FA from Settings → My account if you want an extra layer of security (recommended).
// STEP 02

Mounting the device
under the seat.

  1. Pick a spot that's flat, clean, dry: under the seat is the standard. The main frame, the electrical box or the back of the plate work too. Avoid the immediate vicinity of the exhaust (heat) and the wheels (impacts).
  2. Degrease the surface with a cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry for 30 s.
  3. Peel the film off the 3M adhesive already applied under the device. Press firmly for 30 seconds to activate the glue.
  4. Optional but recommended for motocross / enduro: add two zip ties crossed over it (included in the box). Belt and braces if the bike vibrates hard or gets pressure-washed regularly.
  5. Let the adhesive set for 24 h before the first ride so it reaches full strength.
// AVOID
  • · Sticking it on bare plastic without cleaning — the adhesive won't hold
  • · Sticking it on the scorching-hot metal engine cover
  • · Leaving the device exposed to a direct spray of gravel
  • · Placing another powerful Bluetooth beacon less than 10 cm away (it can interfere with syncing)
STEP 03

Pairing the device to the app.

  1. In the app, open Garage → + Add a bike.
  2. Scan the QR code printed on the device label or stuck on the packaging. If you no longer have the label, the 6-character code on the back of the device works too (manual entry).
  3. The app checks that the device is free (not already assigned to another account). If you bought it second-hand, ask the seller to transfer it from their app — they generate a transfer token that you paste into Settings → Receive a bike.
  4. Enter the make, model and year of your bike. Choose the reference service program (motocross 50, 4-stroke enduro, sport road…) — you can override it later.
  5. Confirm the starting hours: engine hours already on the meter the day of mounting (typically 0 for a new bike, otherwise an honest estimate).
STEP 04

Calibration 60 seconds, just once.

Calibration teaches the device the vibration signature of YOUR engine. It's needed to tell a running engine apart from a bike pushed on its stand, transport in a van, or a knock on the frame.

  1. Open the app, go to the bike, launch Calibration.
  2. Start the engine. Let it idle for the 60 seconds the app asks for.
  3. Switch off the engine. The calibration is saved and signed on the server — it stays valid for life for this bike.
// SPECIAL CASES
  • HOROTAG GPS and HOROTAG ULTIMATE GPS: no vibration calibration, these are pure GPS trackers. You enter your hours by hand in the app after each ride (4 taps). Only the RUUVI counts the hours on its own.
  • HOROTAG ULTIMATE GPS: on top of that, anti-theft settings (home zone, motion sensitivity) and a detailed GPS track of every trip.
STEP 05

Your first ride. You have nothing to do.

Really nothing. On RUUVI, the device detects the start-up, counts the hours, records the session locally. No need to open the app before, during or after. (On GPS and ULTIMATE GPS, you'll enter your hours by hand when you get back — 4 taps.)

When you get back, take your phone near the bike (≤ 10 m) and open the app. Bluetooth syncing happens in the background — you see the hour meter update within seconds.

If you ride in a zone with no 4G (forest, paddock, abroad), no worries: the device stores up to 18 months of riding locally and syncs as soon as you reopen the app within Bluetooth range.

// STEP 06

Log a service.
Two taps and it's recorded.

  1. When the app reminds you of a service due (oil change at 50 h, pads at 90 h, etc.), you go to the bike concerned and tap + Service.
  2. Choose the type from the catalogue (engine oil change, air filter, front pads…) or type a custom one.
  3. Add a photo of the invoice or the replaced part (optional but recommended for resale).
  4. If the service was done at a different engine hour than the current one, adjust the meter.
  5. Confirm. The service entry is signed on the server and attached to the PDF service log.
STEP 07

Share or sell. QR + temporary link.

Three distinct uses for sharing:

  • Prospective buyer at resale: from the bike, Actions → Resale link. You generate a QR or a temporary link (7 days by default, adjustable up to 90 days). The buyer scans it, sees the full service log, can download the official PDF.
  • Mechanic / buddy: same but a short link (24 h). Lets your mechanic see the history before servicing.
  • Permanent transfer: at the point of sale, you generate a transfer token. The buyer pastes it into their app, the bike moves to their account with all its history. The physical device stays on the bike.
TROUBLESHOOTING

When it acts up. The six classic faults.

The app doesn't see the device over Bluetooth
Check that Bluetooth is on on your phone and that you're less than 10 m from the bike. Kill the app then relaunch it. If it still doesn't follow, the device may be in deep sleep — start the engine for 30 s to wake it, then try again.
The meter doesn't move after a ride
Vibration detection can miss if calibration was done with a cold engine on a hard start. Redo a clean calibration from Bike settings → Recalibrate. Note that on HOROTAG GPS and HOROTAG ULTIMATE GPS you have to enter the hours by hand — automatic hour detection only exists on the RUUVI.
False anti-theft notification when I park the bike at a buddy's place
You can add a temporary or permanent trusted zone from Anti-theft → Whitelist. Add your buddy's garage and the bike will stop sending alerts within that radius. Conversely, you can also enable a reinforced Surveillance mode for long-term parking.
The app shows "low battery"
The alert triggers 6 months before it runs out, so you have time. On RUUVI the battery is a standard CR2477, replaceable in under a minute (Phillips screwdriver, refit the seal cleanly). On GPS / ULTIMATE GPS the battery is built in — send the device in for free support, history preserved.
I lost my phone, how do I get my garage back?
Your account is tied to your email, not the phone. Install the app on the new one, log in, everything is restored (bikes, service log, calibrations, paddock). 2FA helps you keep it secure.
The app refuses to edit a service entry in the log
That's intentional. Once signed on the server, a service entry can no longer be edited — that's what guarantees the authenticity of the log for the buyer. You can, however, add a "correction" entry that points to the original and explains the fix.
