Motorcycle hour meter: common questions
How does an hour meter work without being wired in?
The device senses engine vibration. While the engine runs it counts; when it stops, it stops. No wire, no connector, nothing touched on the bike's loom. That is what lets you fit it to a dirt bike or a road bike in seconds.
Why count engine hours instead of kilometres?
An hour of motocross on heavy ground and an hour of motorway do not wear an engine the same way, and an odometer cannot tell them apart. Off-road bikes often have no odometer at all. Every motocross and enduro manufacturer states service intervals in hours, so hours are the right unit.
Does it work on any motorcycle?
Yes, including bikes with no electronics and no connected battery. The device is self-contained and depends on no circuit of the bike. Motocross, enduro, trial, road, cafe racer, classic: the only requirement is to mount it where engine vibration reaches it.
Vibration or wired hour meter, which is more reliable?
A wired meter clamps to the spark plug lead and is fitted once for good, but it has to be wired and it stays on that bike. The vibration device needs no wiring, moves from one bike to another, and feeds a digital service book rather than just a display. The reading itself is the same: real running hours.
What battery life and what water resistance?
Five years on a replaceable battery, and water resistance that copes with rain, mud and a pressure washer. The device stays on the bike through a wash or a downpour.
What happens to the service book if I sell the bike?
The service book follows the bike: it transfers to the buyer with the full history and the recorded hours. That is a concrete argument at resale, where a hand-written paper book is always open to doubt. Compare the 3 models →

Yes. Hour meter, hourmeter or engine hour counter all name the device that totals engine running time. The word changes with regions and catalogues, the object does not. What separates the models is how they count: wired into the loom, pulsed off the spark plug lead, or from vibration as here.
What about a quad, a side-by-side or a scooter?
The principle is unchanged: as soon as a combustion engine vibrates, the device counts. Quad, side-by-side, scooter, garden machinery, jet ski: their service intervals are often stated in hours too, exactly as in off-road motorcycling.
