How a vibration-based engine hour meter works, and why it is more accurate than a meter wired to the spark plug lead or the battery.
Sommaire · 5 parties
You want to know how many hours your engine has done without relying on a dashboard meter (which usually does not exist on a motocross bike). Several technologies exist. Here is how they compare.
01Hour meter wired to the plug lead: the low-cost standard
The €15-30 unit off Amazon or eBay: you wrap a wire around the spark plug lead and the meter counts the HT pulses.
Pros:
- Cheap.
- No battery (it is powered by the pulses).
Cons:
- Sensitive to HT interference, so it can skip or over-count.
- Frequent bad contacts once the wire moves around (mud, impacts).
- Not waterproof in practice, whatever the listing claims.
- An LCD display that dies in the cold.
- You can only read the meter on the bike — impossible to build a history in an app.
02Hour meter wired to battery +12V: more reliable but limited
On a bike with a battery (road-legal enduro), you can wire an hour meter to the ignition. It counts as long as the key is ON.
The problem: it also counts when the engine is not running. Leave the ignition on for 10 min in the paddock while you plug in the ECU app? You just banked 10 min of hours.
03Vibration hour meter: the most accurate
The accelerometer module detects the vibrations given off by a running engine. No wire, no HT pickup, just a module bonded to the frame or tucked under the seat.
Pros:
- Counts only when the engine is genuinely running (vibrations above threshold).
- No wiring, so nothing to connect and nothing to disconnect.
- Naturally waterproof (sealed housing).
- Works on 2-stroke, 4-stroke and electric with zero modification.
Accuracy: on a calibrated HOROTAG RUUVI, the drift over 100 cumulative hours is under 1 minute. That is far more than enough to drive your service intervals.
04Why the factory meter is not enough
On a road-legal 4-stroke enduro (KTM EXC-F, Husqvarna FE, Honda CRF-R rally), the dashboard does show engine hours. But:
- It sometimes counts while stationary if the ignition stays on.
- It stores no history: impossible to answer "how many hours was I on at the last oil change?".
- It sends no notification as you approach a service threshold.
- It vanishes if the dashboard fails, and your credibility at resale goes with it.
An independent sealed device is an external memory you take with you even when you change bikes.
05And at resale?
Selling a used motocross bike rests 100 % on the seller's word about the real hours. With a sealed hour meter (cryptographically signed, as on HOROTAG RUUVI), the buyer can verify the total hours with a single scan. No more haggling based on estimates.
