When to change the piston, rings and cylinder on a 2-stroke motocross engine. Intervals by engine size, wear symptoms, average cost of a top end.

The top end of a 2-stroke means the piston, the rings, the pin and sometimes the cylinder. It is the most critical maintenance job on a two-stroke. Here is when to do it.
01Top end intervals by engine size
Strict competition use:
- 2-stroke 50: top end every 25 h.
- 2-stroke 65/85: every 30 h.
- 2-stroke 125: every 30 h.
- 2-stroke 250/300 (KTM SX, EXC, Husqvarna TC): every 50 h.
Trail riding / moderate enduro: you can push 30 to 50 % beyond that, but keep an eye on it. Go further and you risk an engine failure (a piston that seizes or breaks) — far more expensive to fix.
02Why it comes round so often on a 2-stroke
A 2-stroke piston works much harder than a 4-stroke one:
- It fires on every revolution (versus every other revolution on a 4-stroke).
- No valves to cushion the combustion: everything goes through the piston and the ports.
- No dedicated oil for piston lubrication (just premix or pumped 2-stroke oil), so less margin.
- Extremely high local temperatures, especially on the piston crown.
03Signs your top end is tired
- Harder starting (compression dropping).
- Loss of pull through the midrange.
- Metallic noise at idle or on the overrun (that characteristic rattle).
- Compression measured with a gauge below the manufacturer's figures (typically below 11 bar for a 125, below 12 for a 250).
- Leaks from the cases: unusual oily patches.
04What a top end costs
Depending on engine size and brand:
- 2-stroke 50/65: €80-150 in parts (complete Wössner or OEM piston + gaskets).
- 2-stroke 85: €120-200.
- 2-stroke 125: €180-280.
- 2-stroke 250/300: €280-450.
Doing it yourself: 1 to 2 h in the workshop. Handing it to a mechanic: €80-150 in labour depending on where you are.
Compare that to an engine failure: a bottom-end plus top-end rebuild runs €800-1,500. A preventive top end pays for itself.
05How to know you are at 50 h
Without an hour meter: you cannot know. You are guessing, and the piston usually breaks after the threshold because you forgot.
With a vibration hour meter and a maintenance app (HOROTAG RUUVI), you get an alert saying "top end due in 2 h" well ahead of time. You order the parts, you book the job, you break nothing.
