Digital motorcycle service log: what it changes at resale

Selling a used motocross bike? The service log is the first thing a serious buyer asks for. Here is why a digital log changes things.

01The problem with the paper booklet

The paper service booklet — when it exists at all — has several problems:

• Limited credibility: nothing stops anyone writing down jobs that never happened.
• Self-declared hours: no proof that the 80 h written down are the real hours.
• Frequently lost: a service booklet on a motocross bike means mud in a bag that ends up in the bin after two seasons.
• No filtering: impossible to answer "how long has it been since I changed the chain?".

02What a digital log brings

A motorcycle service log inside an app:

• Automatically dated: every entry is server-timestamped, so the date cannot be fiddled with after the fact.
• Tied to engine hours: every job reads "at 47.2 h" instead of "last June".
• Complete history: 5 years of work fits in your pocket.
• Shareable: one link to paste into the listing, and the buyer scans it.

03Cryptographically signed log: the HOROTAG difference

In the HOROTAG app, the log goes further: every entry is sealed with a server-side RSA signature. Which means:

• You cannot edit anything retroactively.
• Nobody (you, the buyer, us) can alter a line without breaking the signature.
• The buyer verifies with one scan that the log has not been tampered with.

In practice: you generate a QR code to attach to your eBay or classified listing. The buyer scans it, sees the entire history, and the signature confirms the data really came out of the HOROTAG app.

04Impact on resale price

Hard to put an exact figure on it, but across the listings we track:

• Motocross bike with a complete paper log: worth €400 to €700 more than one with no log.
• Motocross bike with a signed digital log: worth €700 to €1,200 more than one with no log.

On a 450 4-stroke worth €5,500 used, that is between 13 and 22 % of added value. The payback on a €129 device is quick.

05Preparing your resale listing

Here is the checklist we recommend:

• Service log up to date, with the last 3 major jobs (top end, suspension, oil change).
• Real engine hours stated in the listing, with the note "hours verifiable by HOROTAG QR scan".
• Invoices for major parts scanned and attached to the log.
• Photos of the bike against a plain background: 3/4 front, side, and detail shots (drivetrain, brake pads, forks).

Play the transparency game and you sell faster and for more. Motocross and enduro buyers are suspicious by nature — give them the tools to check.
