01The short answer
Every 10 engine hours for most four-stroke motocross and enduro bikes. In hard racing, every 5-6 hours.
That's the most common manufacturer recommendation for four-stroke off-road bikes (source: KTM, Yamaha and Honda workshop manuals — see the tables below).
02Why count hours and not kilometres?
A motocross engine spends a lot of its life screaming without going anywhere: technical climbs, water crossings, sitting on the gate. 10 hours of motocross is nothing like 10 hours on the road. The odometer lies. The hour meter is the only honest measure of how much wear you've actually put in.

04Gearbox oil
On four-stroke motocross bikes the gearbox shares its oil with the engine, so the engine oil change covers the gearbox too. On two-strokes (KTM 250 SX, Yamaha YZ250) the gearbox has its own case: change it every 8-10 hours (source: mxteam.com).
05How do you count your hours?
Three ways:
1. Wired hour meter (€15-30) — spliced onto the plug lead or the ignition. Accurate, but fragile in motocross: torn wires, water ingress. 2. Vibration hour meter (€20-50) — glued to the frame, picks up engine vibration. Tougher, but it drifts if you mount it badly. 3. HOROTAG RUUVI (€129) — hour meter, service logbook and automatic reminders in one. 06FAQ
Do I have to change the oil after every ride? No. Every 10 h is roughly 3-5 rides of 2-3 hours. But for racing or hard riding in sand and mud, shorten it to 5-6 h.
Which oil for a four-stroke motocross engine? A quality JASO MA2 four-stroke engine oil, 10W-40 or 10W-50 depending on temperature. Motul 7100, Motorex Cross Power and Bel-Ray Thumper Racing are among the most widely used.
What about the air filter? Clean it after every ride in sand or mud, or every 2-3 rides on dry ground. It matters more than the oil change.
