Motocross and enduro insurance: what does it actually cover? (2026 prices)

Third-party liability, engine failure, theft at the track, transport... What insurers do and don't cover, and what it really costs.

01The baseline: third-party liability

Every registered bike has to carry third-party liability cover (RC). That's the law. Even a motocross bike that only ever runs at a track.

Average price for liability only: €80-150/year depending on the department and the model (source: Assurland and LeLynx comparison sites, 2025-2026).

02What's specific to motocross and enduro

What changes compared with a road bike

  • Declared use: "off-road leisure" or "competition". Declare road use and then break something at a motocross track → the insurer says no.
  • A track is not the road: standard liability cover pays for damage to third parties on the road. On a circuit or private land you need an extension.
  • An FFM licence includes insurance: the national FFM licence (€150-350) includes competition liability plus personal accident cover. That's often enough to ride at club level.

Theft: the real threat

Theft is one of the biggest risks with an off-road bike: no steering lock, light enough for two people to lift into a van, and easy to move on as parts. Theft cover pays out at market value — often 30-50 % less than what you paid, two years down the line.

A GPS tracker (HOROTAG GPS €299 or HOROTAG ULTIMATE GPS €399) sharply improves your odds of getting the bike back, and with some insurers an active anti-theft device counts towards a lower premium.

03The usual traps

1. The "track" exclusion

Even fully comprehensive, most insurers exclude damage on a circuit or off-road terrain. Read the exclusions in the small print.

2. Under-declaring

Declaring your KTM 450 SX-F as a "125 road bike" to pay less → the insurer voids the policy the moment you claim.

3. Licence insurance ≠ bike insurance

The FFM licence covers you (personal accident) and your liability. It does NOT cover your bike (theft, damage, fire). Two different things.

04What we'd do

For a motocross bike: liability only (€80-150) + FFM licence (includes competition liability) + a GPS tracker (so you can locate the bike if it's stolen). Total: €400-600/year. Best cover-per-euro there is for a motocross rider.
