How to do a full oil change on a 4-stroke motocross engine: recommended oil, oil filter, air filter, intervals and practical tips.
Sommaire · 6 parties
On a 4-stroke motocross bike, the oil change is the job that makes the engine last. Here is the procedure and the technical choices.
01Which oil to choose
On a 4-stroke motocross / enduro engine, you are looking for:
- JASO MA or MA2 spec (compatible with a wet clutch).
- SAE 10W-40 or 10W-50 grade depending on climate (50 is thicker, for heat).
- Fully or semi-synthetic, never mineral.
Benchmark brands:
- Motul 7100 4T MA2 (10W-40 or 10W-50) — the global reference, available everywhere.
- Motorex Power Synt 4T (10W-50) — often recommended by KTM.
- Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T (10W-40) — good value.
- Repsol Moto Racing 4T (10W-50).
Avoid car oil, even a well-reviewed one: it is not wet-clutch compatible and your clutch will slip after 5 h.
02Quantity
By engine size:
- YZ250F / CRF250R: ~0.9 litres with the filter.
- KTM 350 SX-F: ~1.1 litres.
- YZ450F / KTM 450 SX-F: ~1.0 litres.
- KTM 500 EXC-F: ~1.3 litres.
Check your manual for the exact quantity — there is sometimes a 100 ml difference that changes everything on the sight glass.
03Oil and oil filter intervals
On a 4-stroke competition bike:
- Oil + oil filter: every 15 h.
- Air filter: clean every 5 h (Twin Air or No-Toil foam filter oil).
On a 4-stroke enduro / trail bike: you can stretch to 20 h on oil, 7-10 h on the air filter.
04Step by step
1. Engine warm (not scalding — the oil flows better but without the burn risk). 2. Stand the bike upright on a stand. Put a drain pan under the drain plug. 3. Undo the engine drain plug (17 or 19 mm spanner depending on model). Keep the sealing washer. 4. Let it drain 5-10 min fully. Inspect the magnetic plug: any flakes? If so, something is going wrong. 5. Replace the oil filter (8 mm Allen key or screwdriver depending on model). 6. Refit the drain plug with a new washer (torque: ~20 Nm typically, check the manual). 7. Fill with the exact quantity. Start it for 30 s, shut it off, wait 2 min. 8. Check the sight glass or dipstick: it must sit between min and max.
05Classic mistakes to avoid
- Reusing the sealing washer (guaranteed leak within 5 h).
- Overtightening the plug (stripped case thread = case replacement = €200-400).
- Forgetting to refit the oil filter.
- Using a mineral oil that makes the clutch slip.
06Tracking your oil changes
The daft part: you do your oil change at 47 h and mentally note "next one at 62 h". Then the season starts, you hit 71 h, and you think "damn, I should have done that".
With HOROTAG RUUVI, the alert lands at exactly 60 h. You stop doing the maths.
